An Affordable Space Watch

While researching various watches by typing, “best watches” in Google I was surprised to see Casio being named numerous times.  Whether it was the F91-W or the infamous calculator watch, Casio was clearly highlighted as one of the best.

The one watch that stood apart from all other Casio watches was the DW5600E-1V.  It wasn’t its clean, simple design that had caught my eye but rather the reports of NASA having approved it for wear in space!

Immediately, I was hooked to learn more about this watch that all of a sudden had history. To put it into perspective, the watch that has been touted as a NASA certified space watch was of course the Omega Speedmaster.   That watch was an icon of its own but takes many people out of the market because of its price tag.

The DW5600E-1V costs around $70 CAD.  To think you can by a watch good enough for NASA for below $100 is unbelievable.

Beyond NASA’s acceptance, many others have proved how tough this watch is by dropping it from a 15 story building and throwing it against a brick wall.  Casio’s website proudly says, “A slapshot by a professional hockey player was all it took to send this G-Shock into history and into a goalie’s mitt, literally. If it can handle a slapshot, it can handle your life. We like to refer to it as the quintessential G-Shock.”  Need I say more?

This G-shock has also developed a following in several Hollywood movies with many celebrities wearing it on film and off-camera as well.  This includes, Steve Carell, Keanu Reeves, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood and George Clooney.

As for the specifications of the DW5600E-1v, they are as follows:

  • Electro-luminescent backlight
  • 1/100 second stopwatch: measuring capacity: 23:59’59.99″
  • Measuring mode: net time, split time, 1st and 2nd place times
